Jozi Food Whore

One short food whore, one long adventure

Gorge-ous Fresh Delights

I can’t even remember how I first came across Gorge but as soon as I heard about them, I wanted to check it out. Their first branch is situated close to my former home and to my work, so for some time now, I’ve been ordering from Gorge for healthy and fresh lunches, smoothies, and fresh juices in a pinch. It definitely makes life easier when you’ve forgotten to plan for lunch and are not a fan of traditional take-away options.

It was quite a natural progression then that I got to chatting to the owners and finding out more about what Gorge was about. A while back, I went to check out their second location in Kramerville and chatted to Chef Bartho Saayman, a co-owner. Just recently, my BFF, Heather Hook and I, sat down with the other owner, Neil, and over a leisurely breakfast, chatted about their origin story.

Though they’re generally considered a healthy option, they did not actually set out to position themselves as a health cafe. Their main focus is “fresh”.

“Everything we do is fresh. All of the sandwiches we make fresh every single day. Our juices are freshly made every single day and made on-site.” Bartho Saayman

For me, it’s the perfect solution and I frequently call them up for salad, or one of their amazing, loaded sandwiches. My favourite has got to be the twin cheese and bacon. The cheeses on there are out of this world. As Bartho says: “Ingredient sourcing is a very very big thing. I have personally been to every single dairy farm we use, like the guys who make our cheeses…”. So you know your sandwich is made of great-quality, locally-sourced produce. For that, I’m happy to spend a little more to make sure I’m having a lunch that’s not going to set me back, health-wise, and will still taste incredible.

Gorge is also an awesome breakfast spot. They do a great build-your-own breakfast. Basics (scrambled eggs, tomato, toast) are included and you can add whatever else you like to your brekkie, making it just right for you. Bacon is naturally a must for me, personally. Heather had the lovely brekkie below.

Build your own breakfast

On this occasion, I opted for an open sandwich as I was dying for some smoked salmon for breakfast.

One of my favourite things about the Gorge brand is their freshly-made juices. These are made to order and will not be standing around. I often order juices that are more veg and less fruit and their latest detox range is brilliant. You can order it to be delivered fresh daily and it includes a breakfast, lunch and dinner smoothie, with the option of adding one more of these for a snack smoothie. The dinner smoothie is fantastic. It has cayenne pepper and gives your metabolism a serious jump-start.

Overall, I highly recommend Gorge. Whether you’re popping in amidst your running around, or getting a delivery to work (if you’re close to one of their branches) or organising dinner with their Hot Graze menu items, you can be assured of great quality, great tasting, fresh and healthy food.
