Some of the best events are held by Hello Joburg Magazine. And when I received the invitation for an event at La Rosa, I was pumping my fist in the air with Huzzahs! Cause I’d been eyeing La Rosa for ages and up until that point, had only managed to find time for a drink there. I couldn’t wait to try the food.
And spoiler alert, I was not disappointed! It was fantastic and I’m already planning my return.
Damn, do I love Mexican food. Maybe it’s all the cheese, but it has a special place in my heart. So from the moment the nachos arrived, right until the very end, I was in my joyous cheese-drenched happy place. While everyone else was finishing off with churros, I tried to use my “dessert stomach” for JUST. ONE. MORE. TACO.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
La Rosa is situated on the edge of the West Rand, on the corner of Christiaan de Wet and John Vorster, in the same centre where the first Pizza Hut opened, and across the road from Beast. Before you start panicking, it’s less than a 20 minute drive from Fourways and the same from Melville and Linden. And the drive is worth it, if you ask me.
I arrived and was shown to a gorgeously decorated table with colourful cloths and muchos sombreros. It wasn’t long before the table was getting laden with nachos of all sorts, and cocktails for days! Their nachos are amazing. They get a lot of their items from a genuine Mexican goods retailer in Midrand so you can be assured of the good stuff. Even soft shell corn tacos, guys! When you go, you must also order the jalapeno croqueta starter. It is truly a thing of beauty! Crumbed and deep-fried, with an amazing cheesy potato filling. I’m getting hungry just thinking of it.

I had stuffed myself on so much nacho joy that by the time the mains arrived, I was about 6 months pregnant with my food baby. But when my eyes landed on the Oaxacan Lamb Barbacoa soft taco, it was love at first sight. I knew I had to have it. Food baby or not. I attacked that taco with so much anticipation, and it did not disappoint. It was tasty and had amazing textures and layers of flavour and I was done. I knew I’d be back for lamb taco again and again.

I wish I could say I regretted having that Pineapple Coconut Margarita because it left less room for food, but even that had me in ecstasy and I never have cocktails! But surely, that has to be the best cocktail I have ever had. My sugar addiction means I really ought not to ever have it again but I’m already trying to figure out how I can reason it into my next visit. Tall Dark & Handsome is already frowning at me.

So, I can’t tell you anything about the churros because I only had eyes for the food, and not dessert. I never even got to the chicken or fish tacos but people were raving all around me. I did manage to grab a leftover Californian Burrito too! Such divine asada in there.
Baja Fish Taco
After chatting to Chef Greg for a while, I learned one or two secrets and I intend to be back for more tacos and secrets and (hopefully) margaritas! My thanks to the amazing team in the kitchen for serving up fantastic fare, and to our brilliant waiters Owen and Kudzai, who ensured that the night ran smoothly, being both friendly and professional! And muchos gracias to Hello Joburg for this lovely dining experience!
