Breakfast, brunch, lunch AND dinner! All together now: “brilliant”. Dining at the new Hobart Grove Doppio Zero is the very definition of “staatmaker”, and I’ve said that exact thing before about Doppio Zero. All the way back to when their deep-fried macaroni & cheese squares totally blew my socks off! Yes, your local Doppio is pet-friendly, but it’s also human-friendly. Friendly staff, great menu, excellent management, fantastic pricing. What was that again? “Brilliant”. Correct.
Be sure to read all the way to the bottom and enter the competition to win dinner for two at Doppio Zero Bryanston (Hobart Grove).
By the way, Staatmaker in this context, in case you honestly don’t know, means something along the lines of “guaranteed to please”, and I’ll leave it at that.
Hobart Grove Location
We really enjoy Hobart Grove. It’s easily accessible and not too deep into the Northern Suburbs that you wouldn’t even dare it, if you didn’t live there. Also, it’s got some great spots, including one of our other favourites, Perron, and obviously now Doppio too! But for Northern Suburbs natives, it’s the perfect spot. Hobart Grove also offers ample parking, and upon entering the centre, you’ll be hard-pressed to miss Doppio in their stand-out location right next to the main circle.
When we arrived for an early lunch one Sunday, we were amazed to find this very new establishment absolutely bustling with patrons happily dining. It was packed with cyclists, brunchers, and the occasional well-behaved fur-baby, with a water dish close by.
The Doppio breakfast menu is extensive, with something for everyone. I can’t think of a better way to spend time enjoying dining with family than to all meet for brekkie, have a lovely morning together, and then grab a few delicious goodies from their bakery section on the way out.
Delicious Lunch & Dinner Options
We had the opportunity to taste a number of small versions of many main menu items, before finally settling on sharing a Poke Bowl to end off the overall rich dining experience on something light, fresh and filling.
The current Doppio main menu covers everything from light, summery meals to gorgeously rich pastas and meaty dishes. The top sellers at the moment are dishes like the Salmon Poke Bowl and the Soul Bowl (light meals) and when it comes to hearty dining, not surprisingly, Pork Belly comes out on top.
Another of their other top sellers, and one of my favourites, has got to be the Shortrib Rigatoni. This dish is heavy for lunch, but a definite winner for dinner. It’s rich and gloriously flavourful; the slow-roasted pulled shortrib deliciously meaty in their mustard, mushroom and garlic cream sauce. Oh my word! The winner of the day’s offerings, and it was hard to pick just one. For Travel Gigolo, the winner was hands-down the Salmon Poke Bowl. It was obvious why this is one of the most popular dishes.
A close second prize goes to the Buttermilk Chicken Taco, perfectly balanced with a zingy sriracha sauce and kewpie mayo. I would have loved to also taste the enticing-sounding pulled pork taco, but our table was already overflowing with dish samples, and we couldn’t possibly add more!
For those with a sweet-tooth, Doppio has you covered with their eye-catching and delectable bakery section. I will admit that I stood in front of the cakes for a long time, reminding myself that my drug of choice is cheese, but Travel Gigolo could not resist and left with a piece of rustic Apple Caramel cake. I wish I hadn’t left without buying a loaf of bread, baked daily on the premises. Their cakes and baked goods, having been made fresh daily at their Gauteng bakery, is also delivered each morning to the various Doppio locations.
Even Travel Gigolo could not resist the allure of a crafty gin & tonic! They now also serve the sugar-free tonics, which made my day! Your choices are varied, from gin to tonic to garnishes, their in-house mixologist has you covered and can probably create something beautiful exactly to your specifications.
We love Doppio Zero and always have. This “staatmaker” restaurant will always be top of the list for us for a great, and affordable, dining experience. Their staff are top-notch, knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and efficient. The kitchen is consistent (always a big deal for me!). As has always been my personal experience, management is on-hand, checking in, and keeping everyone moving and working as a team. Best of all, despite the current increases in pricing everywhere which makes going out a little tough on the budget, Doppio still comes in with great pricing and bang for your buck. You won’t leave hungry, and you won’t leave feeling poor. This also means you can enjoy dining out more regularly.
The new Doppio Zero at Hobart Grove in Bryanston gets my nod. Though the restaurant is new, the team is not, and that’s probably why they’ve been successful from day one. You’ll definitely find it quite busy, especially during weekends, so be sure to go early. Reservations are not available on the weekends for breakfast or lunch. Don’t forget that Doppio Zero is also open for dinner, and makes for a great night out, whether for a big dinner party or date night.
Just in case you want to do the dining taste test yourself, Doppio Zero Bryanston is offering a lovely dinner at the Hobart Grove location to one lucky reader (and their Plus One). Dinner for two to the value of R500, plus a bottle of wine.
