1. New Look

The new look Voodoo Lily Café features eye-catching artwork, especially in the form of dominating feature mosaics. The appealing naked brickwork is nicely offset by the great bursts of colour from these mosaics. We love the new look, and definitely get that New York café vibe they were going for. The music is excellent – not surprising considering the new owner is Larry Hodes, who also owns Arbour Café and Calexico (formerly, Stanley Beer Yard), where great music is guaranteed!

2. New Menu

Voodoo Lily’s new menu comes care of hip, young chef Josh Simon. A well-travelled lover of food, Chef Josh brings with him a wide range of culinary influences, from Italy to Israel, Mexico to New York. The result is a fascinating menu that will keep you returning again and again so you can try everything on offer. Shakshuka and tacos, latkes and curry, pasta and trendy hot brisket on rye. I can’t wait to return to have latkes and more especially, the much talked about shakshuka.

3. Same Ethos

Though the Voodoo Lily Café look and menu has been updated, fans of the original need not worry. The same ethos is being upheld. What made them popular in the past is still applicable. Dog friendly? Absolutely. When we were there, a number of people were enjoying lunch while their furkids were lapping up bowls of water, and dishes from their very own menu options. They also still take special dietary requirements very seriously and menu items are marked as gluten free, vegan or vegetarian, banting, and such, where applicable. Quality still remains front and centre, and fresh, delicious ingredients are a given.

4. Review

I felt both a thrill of excitement and also slight apprehension when I heard that the menu was being overhauled. A quick look upon arrival confirmed great things were in-store, as I quite enjoy finding new, unique things to order at restaurants. And after I had already ordered, Chef Josh came to chat to us and insisted we try one of his signature dishes, the Gnocchi Broccolini. It’s not something I would have considered ordering, but we were happy to try the chef’s suggestion. It came as the biggest surprise that the dish he recommended won hands-down for me as the best dish of the day. Wonderfully fresh and flavourful, with an incredibly rich taste, it is an absolute winter winner. Generally, it was difficult to find anything amiss with what we had ordered. The Hot Brisket on Rye lived up to my hopeful expectations, and I even ate a large bit of Travel Gigolo‘s Chicken Curry, a special on the day (not currently standard on the menu). The Greek Salad pleased us immensely, not being drowned in dressing and arriving fresh, colourful and tasty.

It is my intent to return as soon as possible to enjoy items from the breakfast menu. I am roping in some girlfriends for the adventure. I’m interested to see what the dinner menu will offer.

And as previously mentioned, the music is just killer! You could while away many hours there, basically, and enjoy it immensely.
